Access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy is a crucial factor in improving the quality of life for communities and driving economic and social development. However, many remote areas in Indonesia, especially in rural regions, still experience limited access to energy due to geographical challenges and infrastructure constraints. This disparity poses a serious obstacle to achieve equitable and sustainable development.
PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (PT KPI), a Subholding of Refining and Petrochemical under PT Pertamina (Persero), has demonstrated a strong commitment to the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) through the implementation of various innovative programs focused on sustainability and community empowerment. One of its flagship initiatives supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2060 target is the Desa Energi Berdikari (Independent Energy Village) program, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) model based on the use of renewable energy in remote areas.
This DEB program is implemented in two PT KPI operational units: RU III Plaju and RU IV Cilacap. In Plaju, DEB has been established in several villages such as Plaju Ulu, Desa Singapure, and Sembilang, providing an energy capacity of 48.2 kWh for 134 households. Meanwhile, in Cilacap, the DEB program supplies 33,350 watt peak (WP) of energy, reaching 153 households in areas such as Dusun Bondan and Kalijaran. Both initiatives utilize renewable energy sources such as solar panels and micro-hydro power plants with the goal of improving energy access, community self-sufficiency, and environmental sustainability.
This program not only delivers environmental benefits through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but also brings significant social impact, including job creation, energy management training, and improved living standards. The ESG implementation strategy includes responsible waste management, transparent report to village communities, and strengthened corporate governance.
Nevertheless, DEB also presents potential negative impacts that must be managed properly, such as environmental damage from infrastructure development, solar panel waste handling, and social inequality due to uneven distribution of economic benefits. Therefore, collaboration with local stakeholders, including regional governments and NGOs, is crucial to ensure long-term success.
Overall, the Desa Energi Berdikari program stands as concrete evidence that sustainable energy transformation can be effectively integrated into the business strategy of an oil and gas company, while also reinforcing PT KPI’s position as a pioneer in Indonesia’s energy transition. This approach serves as an inspiring model for similar initiatives that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of clean energy, decent work, and sustainable community development.
