Prof. Shaohua Dong is a leading expert in pipeline integrity assessment and safety engineering, recognized as one of the key founders of pipeline integrity management in China. He currently serves as Director of the Pipeline Technology and Safety Research Center at China University of Petroleum and has more than 30 years of experience in the petroleum and petrochemical industry.
Prof. Dong is a nationally recognized scientist, selected as a leading talent under the “Ten Thousand People’s Plan” of the People’s Republic of China, a top innovator by the Ministry of Science and Technology, a Tianshan Scholar of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, and academic leader of multiple high-precision disciplines in Beijing, including Urban Energy Security and Emergency Management. He earned his doctorate in oil and gas storage and transportation engineering from China University of Petroleum in 2001, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in materials science and engineering at Beihang University in 2011.
He has played a pivotal role in establishing China’s first pipeline integrity technology team and developing a comprehensive research field that integrates pipeline data platforms, risk identification, testing, assessment, repair, and information engineering. His contributions have advanced China’s pipeline integrity technology to align with international standards, with major impact on both safety engineering and energy security.
Prof. Dong has led several high-level national initiatives, including serving as chief scientist of the National Key R&D Program “Public Safety Special Project” on oil and gas reserve safety and security technologies. Internationally, he chairs the NACE STAG 75 Integrity Technical Committee of the American Corrosion Society and serves as senior consultant to ASME. Domestically, he is a member of the National Expert Group on Safe Production and multiple technical committees on pressure piping and corrosion.
His research has resulted in significant scientific and technological progress: he has authored 12 academic monographs and 10 textbooks, published over 150 papers (more than 50 indexed by SCI/EI), and secured over 20 patents. He has also contributed to more than a dozen national and industry standards. Prof. Dong has supervised and trained over 100 master’s and doctoral students.
His outstanding contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the National Technological Invention Award (Second Prize, 2018), the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize, 2021), the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize, 2017), and multiple top prizes from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation.
Prof. Dong’s pioneering work has established the theoretical and technological foundations of pipeline integrity assessment in China, significantly enhancing national energy infrastructure safety and global knowledge in the field.
