Head of the Department of Engineering and Refining Technologies
Research Institute of Petroleum Industry
Iran
I am Ali Ghaffari, holding a PhD in Chemical Engineering and currently serving as the Head of the Department of Engineering and Refining Technologies at the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) in Iran. My professional career is exclusively focused on the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry, with particular emphasis on process design, optimization, and the development of refining technologies.
My core expertise lies in the technical and economic evaluation of refining processes. A significant portion of my recent research has been dedicated to a comprehensive assessment of the kerosene production process. This work involves meticulous analysis of various production pathways, evaluating their efficiency, product quality, and economic viability in current market conditions. The objective is to identify and develop processes that are not only technologically advanced but also cost-effective and sustainable for commercial application.
Beyond conceptual research and evaluation, my responsibilities extensively cover practical aspects of project implementation. I am deeply involved in the preparation of critical engineering documents and the execution of Basic Engineering Design packages. This phase is crucial as it translates laboratory and pilot-scale findings into detailed blueprints for industrial-scale applications. My work ensures that new technologies and process optimizations are grounded in sound engineering principles, paving the way for successful Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and detailed engineering phases. This includes developing process flow diagrams (PFDs), heat and material balances, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and comprehensive equipment specifications.
Leading a specialized team at RIPI, I oversee a portfolio of projects aimed at developing indigenous technologies for crude oil refining and natural gas processing. Our focus areas include process intensification, enhancing the quality of petroleum products to meet stringent international standards, and finding innovative solutions for complex refining challenges. Our work is pivotal in reducing dependency on foreign technical know-how and fostering self-sufficiency in Iran's petroleum industry.
My overarching goal is to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application within the downstream sector. I am committed to fostering international collaboration, believing that the exchange of knowledge and expertise is key to driving innovation. By leveraging the latest scientific advancements and global best practices, I aim to contribute significantly to enhancing the efficiency, profitability, and environmental sustainability of oil refining and gas processing operations, both nationally and on the global stage.
